Oculoplastic Surgery

At Andersen Eye Surgery Center, all oculoplastic surgery is performed by Dr. Gregory Hazen, a Board Certified, Fellowship Trained Ophthalmologist. He is specifically trained oculoplastic surgery to improve appearance and protect vision and performs surgery in both the office and our state-of-the-art surgical facility on an outpatient basis.

Oculoplastic surgery repairs the result of injury, improves the appearance of the eyelid and, most importantly, allows the eyelids to adequately protect the eye. Eyelid surgeries are also called blepharoplasty.

COMMON EYELID CONDITIONS requiring surgical TREATMENT

  • Loose, droopy or "baggy" eyelids (ptosis)
  • Removal of excess skin (dermatochalasis) of the eyelids
  • Eyelids that turn in (entropion) or turn out (ectropion)
  • Tear duct blockages
  • Damage from injury

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM OCULOPLASTIC SURGERY

Eyelid surgery is preformed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia with or without sedation. The procedures are typically 15 to 45 minutes long and patients usually return to normal activity in a few days. Details of each customized surgical plan and recovery period are discussed at the consultation visit. You will need to bring your contacts or glasses to your consultation.

At the evaluation:

  • We will need your medical information and a complete medical history, including a list of current prescribed and over-the-counter medications.
  • You must inform your surgeon if you have allergies or if you smoke.
  • Your eyes will be examined and a test for tear production may be performed.
  • Your surgeon will discuss with you why you are interested in the procedure and what your expectations are.
  • Your surgeon will explain the surgical techniques, type of anesthesia, risks, and costs.
  • Ask any and all questions you may have about the procedure prior to your surgery.

Health insurance and procedure costs
If your vision is affected or if there is a medical reason for the procedure, your health insurance may cover all or part of the fee. However, health insurance typically does not cover a "cosmetic" procedure, so if there is no medical need for the surgery the patient may be expected to cover all costs.
